Go to the X:/Assignments folder and open Graphic_terms.doc

Save it to your X:/ drive (in the folder with your name on it) as lastname_graphic_terms. Use this list of websites with definitions for these terms. You can also search for them or try Wikipedia.

If you did not turn in the graphic terms assignment Friday, make sure you print it and turn in today.

Finish looking through Chapter 1 in the Classroom in a Book textbook.

Pick up the Photoshop CS3 Tools worksheet and write in the name and shortcut of each tool. Turn in by the end of class.

Learn about Photoshop tools.

I will begin taking photos of you (head & shoulders) tomorrow to use for my seating chart. Practice your smile!

Wed.
9-02

Start taking photos.

Go to the X:/Assignments folder and open image_formats_info.doc. Use the website link to find the information needed to fill in the chart. Make sure your name is typed on it, print and turn in. • Section A #'s 1 - 5
  • Section B #'s 1, 2, 3, 4

All of these videos are very short, so you should be able to watch most or all of these today.

Please return the headphones to the box before you leave class!

Junior Class Meeting during 2nd period

Finish reviewing tools; transforming objects; layers; filters.

You will work with your own photo to crop and make adjustments on. Find your photo in the X:/Assignment folder and open it in Photoshop. I will tell you how to save it so that you are not working on the original photo -- always work on a duplicate of the original!

Thurs.
9-10

Continue working on your photo. Experiment with various filters.

Save your best version as lastname_filter as a .psd (Photoshop) file to your X:/ drive. Paste a copy in the X:/Turnin folder.

Fri.
9-11

All missing work due before you leave class today.

Learn how to make selections in Photoshop.

Go to Atomic Learning and watch the videos in section D. Making Selections. It should take less than 15 - 20 minutes to watch all of these videos. We have gone over most of this information in class already, but you may have missed some of the information I gave you about using the selection tools.

In addition, go to the Adobe Video Workshop to see the "Making and refining selections" tutorial. You can read this tutorial or click on the "Watch this tutorial" link on the page. If you want to follow along, use the purse file from the X:/Assignments folder.

Mon.
9-14

Open Photoshop, then look in the X:/Assignment folder for these files:

  • surfboards.jpg
  • coins2.jpg
  • pepper.jpg

You will use these for today's assignment. Use one (or more) of the Selection tools to select one surfboard, the pepper and one coin. Copy each of these selections and paste into a new file (use default Photoshop size). You can also place the move tool inside the selection and drag it to the new file.

Create a composition using these three items. You can duplicate layers, rotate and scale the items to use in your final product. Arrange the items in a eye-pleasing way. I will show you examples.

Save the file you create to your X:/ folder as lastname_selection.psd. Paste a copy into the X:/Turnin/Selection folder.

Tues.
9-15

Learn how to use quick mask or layer mask to make selections. Open sunflower.jpg, copy it to a new Photoshop file. Practice using layer mask to select the sunflower. I will also show you how to use the extract filter to select an object.

Open a new file that is 5" x 7". Choose 3 or more of the photos below -- you must include one flower and the butterfly or hummingbird.

Select object(s) from each photo. Use a variety of selection methods to select the objects from these photos:

axe lily
butterfly pink_sunglasses
cat rat
sunglasses umbrella
hummingbird yellow_rose
iris

Combine the images in a new file; use the transform option to change the size and rotation, and duplicate layers as needed to create a pleasing and/or interesting arrangement that tells a visual story of some kind.

Save as lastname_story to your X:/ folder. Copy that file and paste it into the X:/Turnin/Story folder.

Wed.
9-16

Finish the lastname_story assignment from yesterday. Save as a Photoshop file to your X:/ folder; paste a copy into the X:/Turnin/Story folder.

Check the missing work list to see if you failed to turn in an assignment or need to redo an assignment. If your name is on the list, you did not turn in the work.

You MUST save files to YOUR folder first. Then find the file, copy it, and paste it into the Turnin folder.

Thurs.
9-17

Look at this tutorial that uses selections, levels, and layers and blending modes to combine two photos. Pick one photo of a building and one photo of a sign from the links below to use for this tutorial. Follow the instructions carefully -- and do all of them!

Save as lastname_oldbuilding.

Mon.

Columbus Day -- No School

Tues.
10-13

Open a new Photoshop file (300 x 300 pixels, 300 resolution, white background) and save as lastname_business. Save as both a .psd and a .gif file in your lastname_logos folder.

Create a logo for a business (this can include sports teams, designer fashion lines, universities or other schools, cars, etc.) that uses both text and custom shape(s). Keep in mind that your logo should be legible, simple, represent the company you pick, and have no more than 3 colors. It should take up as much of your work area as possible -- don't have a small logo floating in the middle of a big blank space.

Do NOT use an existing logo or company symbol (such as the Nike swoosh) or other images.

Look at this page about designing business logos. It has some good ideas that may help you get started with your own.

Wed.
10-14

Use only what you can create in Photoshop -- no images from the Internet.

Fri.
10-16
